What made you apply for a Hayfin internship?
Hayfin seemed to strike the perfect balance by having the culture of a small firm, while being a sizable and influential fund manager.
What is your typical day to day?
I typically worked on new investment opportunities – attended investor presentations, helped with slides and financials for the memos, and attended the business selection and investment committees.
Other tasks included tracking activity in the credit markets and portfolio analysis, which provided me with a comprehensive overview of the broader market as well as Hayfin’s past investments. As part of the programme, we had multiple weekly sessions, including introductions to all Hayfin teams, an office visit to a law firm, and talks with senior management. These experiences offered a rare and invaluable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the business.
The team I worked with was welcoming and supportive. Everyone spared time to answer my questions, I was included in all the socials, meetings, and tasks as much as the rest of the team, and my name was included on all the memos I contributed to. Hayfin’s culture encourages independence and autonomy while setting high standards of work, which pushed me to learn and be proactive.
Biggest take-away from internship experience?
I improved many technical and soft skills during the internship, learnt how to think more like an investor, formed relationships with highly talented and successful professionals and learnt about a broad range of industries by analysing various investment opportunities. However, the most valuable aspect of the experience was the clarity it provided about my interests and future goals. Overall, I feel far more confident about the path ahead, and I believe Hayfin was the ideal first step to launch my professional journey.
